Friday, 07. 3. 2009

This fact sheet addresses some of the questions surrounding the efforts to add protections against discrimination based on Gender Identity to the Indiana Civil Rights Law. When gender identity is added, the law will prohibit discrimination in the areas of employment, education, public accommodations, and housing in Indiana. When passed, Indiana will join 13 other states and the District of Columbia which currently prohibit discrimination based on gender identity (as of July 5, 2009):

  • California
  • Colorado
  • District of Columbia
  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Iowa
  • Maine
  • Minnesota
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Washington

Our Inspiration

Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. That ripple builds others. Those ripples—crossing each other from a million different centers of energy—build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and injustice.
–Senator Robert F. Kennedy, 1966
