When Good Gays Use Gender Expression as an Insult...

Submitted by parkerb on Sat, 08/12/2006 - 2:05am.

Well, over on Advance Indiana a good post turned ugly. In AI's discussion of Rep. Woody Burton's new "In God We Trust" license plates, I was eagerly agreeing and glad that he was covering the issue until he resulted to insulting Rep. Burton based on gender stereotypes and homophobia.

Advance Indiana concludes this post with,

Anyone notice how many rings and gold bracelets Woody wears. Who's he trying to be? Liberace? Where I grew up Woody, real men don't wear a bunch of rings and bracelets. Them are for girls. But we know Woody's true passion is for women (note the plural) so we shouldn't be confused by this expression.

INTRAA Attends Indiana Black Pride Town Hall Meeting

Submitted by parkerb on Thu, 08/10/2006 - 10:31pm.

On August 10, 2006, I was lucky enough to be with five board members of INTRAA who attended the Indiana Black Pride Town Hall Meeting. The meeting was fun, engaging, and worthwhile for everyone who attended. Folks should consider attending as many of the Black Pride Events, as possible over the upcoming weekend to enjoy themselves and support Indiana Black Pride in their efforts.

THe meeting was held at Jesus Metropolitan Community Church and had tables available for supporting community organizations to facilitate networking and incrase awareness of available resources within the LGBT community. INTRAA may have been the only organization that was not a cosponsor of the event to have a staffed table and to make such a strong showing in attendance. The Interfaith Coalition on Non-Discruimination, The Human Rights Campaign and the National Black Justice Coalition cosponsored the event.

Perspective...

Today, I spent hours reading the news and trying to catch up on the world. My life lately has been very busy so I have fallen into a local politics and academic vortex. The state of the world is really scary. The below speech seems to really capture the global nature of our situation. Gay marriage and adoption rights are important issues. They can't usurp life and death concerns from primary positioning.

Bloomington Pride Update

Bloomington Pride Picnic - 7/4/2006 (pic by John Clower) Today, I (along with Bryan, Lori, Vivian, Leah, Cianan, Neil and some of our Bloomington Colleagues) staffed the INTRAA booth for the the Pride Picnic in Bloomington. It was a small but enjoyable event. We had more time to talk to interested people. Seems like more people approached the booth than at Indianapolis Pride. Bloomington seems to have a fairly large trans community and my guess is that we will be putting more effort into organizing there. If you live in Bloomington or have any leads for transfolks we should contact or allies who might be interested in working with us, please send me an email.

Coming Out?

I decided to try something new and do a biography of one of my friends. Who has been partnered with a transman for over five years and dated transmen prior to her current partner. So much of the literature around transfolks ignore the experiences and understandings their partners bring to the conversation and the community. So I wanted to focus on her experiences and her identity instead of her partners. When I presented my proposal as an interpretive biography it was well received.

However, instead of focusing on my research design and any methodological issues the questions all dealt with trans 101 type information and especially how someone could end up in a relationship with a trans person.
